Williams sisters could meet in Open quarters

The Williams sisters could meet in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.
The Open held its draw ceremony Thursday. Struggling four-time defending champion Roger Federer could face No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
New No. 1 Rafael Nadal has several players who have been playing well lately in his half of the draw. He could meet American James Blake in the quarters.
Top seed Ana Ivanovic could face No. 6 Dinara Safina in the women's quarters. Safina won a silver medal at the Olympics.

Verdasco dedicates win to Madrid crash victims

Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco won his quarterfinal at the Pilot Pen Thursday, beating Mischa Zverev 6-2, 7-6 (4).
The Spaniard said he was still mourning the death of the 153 people who died in the crash of a Spanair Flight at Madrid's Barajas Airport on Wednesday.

India's Mirza out of U.S. Open

Sania Mirza of India pulled out of the U.S. Open on Thursday because of a right wrist injury that flared at the Olympic Games.
Mirza, who had surgery on her wrist in April, retired from her first-round singles match in Beijing. A statement released Thursday said she had tests and was advised to rest for three weeks.
"It's very disappointing for me to miss the U.S. Open, I've always done well in this tournament," said the 21-year-old Mirza, who reached the fourth round in 2005.

Nadal passes Federer for top spot in rankings

Rafael Nadal's summer keeps getting better.
A day after winning an Olympic gold medal in Beijing, Nadal officially unseated Roger Federer to become the world's No. 1 tennis player when the ATP rankings came out on Monday.
Federer had been atop the rankings for 235 weeks, but Nadal has won six tournaments this year and heads into next week's U.S. Open as the favorite to win his third straight Grand Slam.

Nadal, Ivanovic draw top seeds at U.S. Open

Rafael Nadal was seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open on Tuesday, making it the first time since January 2004 that a man other than Roger Federer holds that top spot at a Grand Slam tournament.
Ana Ivanovic is the No. 1 seed on the women's side. The tournament begins Aug. 25, and the draw will be announced Thursday.
The U.S. Open followed Monday's rankings for its seedings, and Nadal replaced Federer at No. 1 for the first time this week.

Hewitt out of U.S. Open field following surgery

Former champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia has withdrawn from next week's U.S. Open after undergoing hip surgery.
Hewitt said in a statement published on his Web site on Wednesday he is frustrated at not being able to play but had exhausted every possibility besides surgery
"Surgery was always the last resort, but unfortunately that's what it came down to," the former world No. 1 said.
